We were given a reasonably good-smelling citrus wood scent that really is cut short by the intentional lean towards lower performance, since with the heavier Varvatos fragrances, you can get around this "feature not a bug", by simply over-applying.
You have a well-crafted mostly/entirely synthetic freshie built for cost but not 100% smelling like it is, by a master perfumer who understood the client's needs and executed accordingly. I know this is a pretty short and sweet review when I've usually had more to say about fragrances from this house (for better or worse), but Artisan is too cut and dry for lengthy expositions. I'd say this is only really a casual summer scent at best, and despite the masculine lean early on, can be quite unisex because who doesn't love neroli? Wear time stops at only 4 hours and sillage goes out to lunch about half-way through it. Ginger and some woody aromachemicals move into a base of ambrox and clean musks, something pretty new in 2009 for sure. Rodrigo Flores-Roux was still very much unofficial house perfumer during this period of Varvatos production, on something of a permanent loan from Givaudan to Varvatos while they were under Shiseido distribution, something that ended sometime after EA Fragrances picked up the license and began abusing it with over-researched and marketing-driven garbage (see the JV x NJ line). I sorta call this the "4711 effect", and it's something I like to avoid outside a traditional cologne.
That said, I think this is at least competent for a discount price, even if you'll end up draining the 4.2 oz bottles a lot faster than you might suspect with needed reapplication throughout the day. Top notes are Clementine, Tangerine, Marjoram and Thyme middle notes are Orange Blossom, Ginger, Lavender and Jasmine base notes are Musk, Woodsy Notes and Amber. Artisan was created by John Varvatos and Rodrigo Flores-Roux. I'm personally not the biggest fan of this house and I have tried many, including flankers of this before finally getting around to the original itself, so I had a bit of familiarity and tempered expectations going in. Artisan by John Varvatos is a Citrus Aromatic fragrance for men. The scent is rather short-lived and weak by the performance standards of most modern "cologne bros" but such is the case with most of the Varvatos house to begin with, since Varvatos doesn't like strong fragrances and prefers them to be more of a second-skin. Artisan by John Varvatos (2009) is a staple and surprisingly non-aquatic fresh fragrance that kicked off the long-legged line of the same name, with a now-iconic wicker wrap around the standard Varvatos bottle.
